Call for Submissions: 'Li-Yi China: Excellent Poetry and Prose Exhibition'

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and promote the splendid Chinese traditional culture, the China Culture Promotion Association is proud to present the "Li-Yi China" series of events. We are now officially announcing the call for submissions for the "Li-Yi China: Excellent Poetry and Prose Exhibition." Get your creative hats on!

I. Background and Introduction

Li-Yi (礼义), encompassing rites and righteousness, stands as the fundamental cornerstone for defining human relationships, discerning right from wrong, resolving doubts, harmonizing families and states, and securing peace globally. It forms the bedrock and vital embodiment of morality. Without Li-Yi, individuals cannot stand, families cannot prosper, nations cannot flourish, and the world cannot find tranquility. Every culture, civilization, and spiritual character of any nation is inextricably linked to Li-Yi.

China has been known as the "Land of Rites and Righteousness" since ancient times, creating a rich, diverse, and profound culture of Li-Yi. Today, as the Chinese nation builds a modern civilization at a higher level, its impact on the development of human civilization is ever-growing. To contribute to the great cause of revitalizing Chinese Li-Yi culture and showcasing the charm of a great Eastern nation of Li-Yi, and to help enhance the Li-Yi literacy of the Chinese people and promote the development of Li-Yi disciplines in China and worldwide, the China Culture Promotion Association established the Li-Yi Culture Promotion Committee in 2022. Its specific mission is to promote Li-Yi culture and foster the collaborative development. To date, we have accumulated over one hundred thousand words of research and creative achievements in Li-Yi culture, held 12 thematic Li-Yi culture events, garnered news coverage from hundreds of media outlets with tens of millions of views and clicks, and brought together more than two hundred Li-Yi luminaries from political, academic, artistic, and business circles. These efforts support the compilation of the "Contemporary Chinese Etiquette Encyclopedia." Furthermore, we actively use Li-Yi principles to help address the "three major family anxieties" of marital problems, family education, and elder care. We have united nearly 200 outstanding entrepreneurs to promote the spirit of Li-Yi in product packaging, advertising, and corporate culture, expanding the scope of the Li-Yi cause. It is anticipated that the internal review of the "Crowning, Wedding, Funeral, and Sacrificial Rites" sections of the "Contemporary Chinese Etiquette Encyclopedia" will be completed by June 2024, entering the national representative review stage. In addition, a public letter of recommendation, drafted by several experts, professors, and scholars, proposing the establishment of a "Li-Yi Studies" discipline, has been sent to 100 universities in China. Each letter was personally handwritten by calligraphers organized by our association and presented to the current presidents of the 100 universities as a grand calligraphic artwork.

II. Theme and Significance

To gather more talent, wisdom, and strength to jointly build a modern Chinese civilization that "values rites and righteousness, embodies rites and righteousness, champions great rites and righteousness, and dedicates rites and righteousness," and to further enhance the image of China as a great nation of Li-Yi, we will continue to hold the "Li-Yi China" series of events, including the "Li-Yi China: Excellent Poetry and Prose Exhibition," the "Li-Yi China: Excellent Calligraphy Exhibition," the "Li-Yi China: Excellent Painting Exhibition," the "Li-Yi China: Excellent Short Drama Art Exhibition," and the "Li-Yi China: Famous Works Recitation Exhibition," among other nationwide activities.

The revitalization of Li-Yi culture is a national undertaking that urgently requires the joint writing, painting, and advocacy of numerous artistic pioneers. Literature is "a great undertaking for governing the nation and an immortal endeavor." Poetry and prose contain immense energy, and therefore, we sincerely invite literary giants and virtuous individuals from all walks of life to participate in the revival of Li-Yi culture with their poems and prose (including couplets, poems, odes, short essays, essays, etc.), creating a contemporary Chinese Li-Yi cultural extravaganza to dedicate to the great New China and the New Era!

Chairman Hua Guozhong with Vice President Long Zihui

The celebrated painter Long Zihui presented a magnificent masterpiece, 'Wanli Jiangshan Map,' to the Zhonglian Guoxing Painting and Calligraphy Academy. Long Zihui, also known as Cheng Huijun, Cheng Zihui, and Cheng Jiongtao, was born in 1971 in Chielechuan, at the foot of the Yin Mountains, under a sky resembling a yurt covering the vast expanse. The Mongolian grasslands are known for the scenic view of cattle and sheep grazing as the wind brushes the grass, the painter currently serves as the Vice President of the China Oriental Academy and the Vice Chairman of the Hainan Provincial Ethnic Artists Association. A distinguished professional painter, Long Zihui studied under Professor Hairihan of Inner Mongolia Normal University, and currently acts as a teaching assistant for Professor Zou Linfeng at Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. With a profound foundation and natural talent, she has developed her own unique style, creating artworks that evoke the imagery of flowing mountains and rivers, and the beauty and grandeur of the grasslands. Her brushstrokes flow like water over rocks, resulting in pieces with a natural and captivating quality.

Like Feng Zikai before her, now comes Long Zihui

Long Zihui, Vice President of China Oriental Academy

Long Zihui offers her unique interpretation of Chinese ink wash painting: Beginning with Xu Wenchang in the late Ming Dynasty, Chinese flower-and-bird paintings began to "break away from superficial resemblance," marking a shift from the use of imagery and brushwork to a structure based primarily on brushwork. Although the shadow of imagery can still be seen in flower-and-bird paintings, this imagery has gradually been replaced by the form of brushwork. The "form and spirit" determinism of art is bound to be replaced by the individualized shaping of the modern brushwork structure. Although Qi Baishi was influenced by the times and his works also reflected a yearning for the pleasures of life, in my artistic pursuit, this pleasure of life is gradually replaced by the shaping of brush and ink. In particular, Huang Binhong's establishment of an artistic construction method based on brushwork and composition marks the beginning of an independent and modern aesthetic based on brushwork. The hallmark of modernity is the continuous abandonment of objects and a return to the formalism of media. Of course, this form of Orientalism modernity has its unique Oriental attributes and historical and cultural traditions. Freehand flower-and-bird painting is also at this historical juncture, constantly examining oneself and seeking a kind of linguistic purity.

The terms "form and spirit" and "mind and matter" hold significant positions in the history of Chinese painting as crucial terms for critiquing it, serving as the core concepts for shaping imagery in Chinese painting. Since Wang Meng in the Yuan Dynasty for landscape painting, and Qing Teng Baiyang and Xu Wei in the Ming Dynasty for flower-and-bird painting, Chinese painting gradually shifted away from an aesthetic direction dominated by image shaping, moving towards an aesthetic style based on brushstrokes and ink. Through continuous promotion by modern and contemporary masters such as Zhao Zhiqian, Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, and Huang Binhong, aesthetics have gradually moved towards an artistic path with freehand brushwork as the aim. After Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, and other masters, the height reached by Chinese freehand brushwork is difficult for future generations to achieve; or, from a certain perspective, they have reached the artistic peak from the traditional imagery + brushwork aesthetic, leaving little room for future scholars to develop. How to break through this predicament and dilemma of freehand brushwork is a common topic for every artist.

Renowned painter Long Zihui's masterpiece, 'Wanli Jiangshan Map,' is permanently collected by Zhonglian Guoxing

Painting and Calligraphy Academy.

Long Zihui incorporates the study of Qin Zhao inscriptions, Han script, and Six Dynasties inscriptions into her daily practice. Her seal carvings draw inspiration from ancient seals and Han seals, forming her own artistic style characterized by simplicity, depth, ruggedness, and antiquity. She uses freehand brushwork as a form of heteromorphic isomorphism of calligraphy and seal carving, introducing the simplicity and depth of calligraphy and the changes and strangeness of seal carving into Chinese painting creation, forming another form of artistic appearance with personal aesthetic signs. The pursuit of art refers to the principles and values that people pursue beauty and art. The value of art lies in its ability to show the infinite possibilities of human creativity. Through the artist's creation, it can convey emotions, thoughts, and values, and stimulate people's thinking and perception. The spirit of artistic pursuit is also reflected in the pursuit of original works, respect for the artist's creative process and the value of the works, and respect and tolerance for multiculturalism and diversity. The spirit of the pursuit of art is also the pursuit of a better life. The aesthetic value of art can allow people to enjoy the feeling of beauty, enrich the inner world, and improve the quality of life. Art originates from life, is beautiful in life, and is also an indispensable spiritual enjoyment and spiritual food in a beautiful life. Long Zihui is at the right time in her great youth, and she must continue to strive for self-improvement, God rewards diligence, and the wise are teachers. Continue to develop, continue to forge ahead, never forget the original intention and devote yourself to art, pursue the life of art, and perfectly cultivate your artistic life.

Traditional Culture is 'Heating Up,' Cultural Confidence is 'Taking Root'

The recent Dragon Boat Festival holiday saw a plentiful supply of cultural and tourism products across the country, along with a vibrant array of folk activities. As the first Chinese traditional festival to be included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the Dragon Boat Festival embodies the profound essence of outstanding Chinese traditional culture. Regions across the nation rolled out diverse traditional folk cultural activities like making sachets, wrapping zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), wearing Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing), dragon boat races, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The rich and colorful festive atmosphere not only allowed people to experience the deep historical and cultural heritage but also breathed new life into traditional culture in this new era.

Recently, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized at a symposium on cultural inheritance and development that Chinese culture has a long history and Chinese civilization is profound and extensive. Only through a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the history of Chinese civilization can we more effectively promote the creative transformation and innovative development of outstanding Chinese traditional culture, more vigorously advance the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and build a modern Chinese civilization. It's all about respecting our roots while looking to the future!

Traditional festivals embody the collective consciousness of the nation and depict the common foundation of culture. Throughout history, national festivals have been passed down through generations with vibrant and meaningful celebrations. Diverse recreational activities have become the "carriers" of traditional culture, and changes in people's lifestyles have injected even more new elements into these festivals. The various era-appropriate festive activities launched by regions, such as artistic performances, folk games, and distinctive tourism, develop through inheritance, allowing people to more truly experience the power of culture. For example, in Zigui County, Hubei Province, the hometown of Qu Yuan, the Dragon Boat Festival includes not only traditional rituals to commemorate Qu Yuan and dragon boat races, but also Guofeng (Chinese style) garden parties, lantern festivals, intangible cultural heritage alley Dragon Boat Festival custom experiences, and popular classic poetry, with activities like "reading poetry and poetry competitions," blending folk customs with contemporary trends in various forms. The Double Ninth Festival has become a symbol of the Chinese nation's tradition of respecting, honoring, and assisting the elderly. For instance, in the Jinnan region of Shanxi Province, people ascend to high places for a distant view, appreciating the mountains and rivers; in Kaifeng, Henan Province, people admire chrysanthemums and wear dogwood; in Wuchang, Hubei Province, people drink Double Ninth wine, using various folk customs to evoke cultural memories and cultivate cultural confidence. Today, these festival folk customs are deeply rooted in the hearts of the Chinese people, subtly influencing their way of thinking and behavior.

Dragon boat racing originated from ancient dragon totem sacrificial rituals. From the initial prayer for blessings to today's folk sports activities, its cultural connotations of unity, cooperation, and continuous self-improvement have been passed down in one continuous line. In 2021, dragon boat racing made its debut as a demonstration sport at the Tokyo Olympics. Compared with traditional dragon boat races, the carefully developed competitive dragon boats are more design-conscious and speed-oriented. This year, the dragon boat event will be featured as an official competition event at the Hangzhou Asian Games. According to He Yi, Secretary-General of the Chinese Dragon Boat Association, dragon boat racing activities are currently focusing on technological innovations that comply with the Olympic Games, development, and international exchange and promotion to showcase the spirit of solidarity and courageous competition to the world, further promoting the going global of Chinese traditional sports culture. It's awesome to see these ancient traditions getting a modern spin!

Intangible cultural heritage is a vivid testimony to the continuous inheritance of Chinese civilization. Only by developing through innovation and inheriting through development can we grasp the pulse of the times and lead the trend. For example, Nanjing porcelain carving, which has a history of more than 200 years, integrates the essence of painting, calligraphy, and seal carving. Yang's Nanjing porcelain carving, based on tradition, adopts Western oil painting techniques and draws on the creation techniques of Chinese painting's boneless method and Dunhuang mural halo dyeing method, developing from the traditional "line" carving as the mainstay to a creation method that "emphasizes both carving and painting, and wins with painting," giving Nanjing porcelain carving intangible heritage new vitality. In recent years, the level of protection and utilization of cultural heritage in my country has been continuously improved. Forty-three projects have been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List and Register, ranking first in the world.

With the advent of the digital era, technology has become a new "carrier" for inheriting traditional culture. Digital technologies such as "cloud exhibitions" and immersive experiences are widely used, opening up new spaces for cultural inheritance and innovation. For example, in the intangible cultural heritage-themed metaverse virtual scenic spot, tourists can not only personally experience various eating, drinking, and playing projects with the theme of "intangible cultural heritage" offline, but also log in through their mobile phones or VR glasses without regional restrictions, listen to unique stories at any time, enjoy festive performances up close, and immerse themselves in traditional folk cultural activities. Taking the content value of outstanding traditional culture as the core, coupled with a variety of digital media technologies to create a real, all-round sensory atmosphere, can better convey the values and humanistic spirit of outstanding traditional culture.

Among the outstanding traditional cultural resources, there are still many precious historical and cultural heritages. As non-renewable resources, cultural heritages are difficult to preserve and protect, and it is not convenient to show them in physical form for a long time. The Palace Museum and the Dunhuang Research Institute have respectively established the "General Catalogue of Collections of the Palace Museum" database and the Digital Dunhuang Resource Library, using modern digital information technology to "revive" the cultural relics collected in museums, the heritage displayed on the vast land, and the words written in ancient books.

Chinese civilization was once a dazzling guiding star in world history, making outstanding contributions to human civilization. The reason why Chinese civilization has a long history of 5,000 years is that we have not abandoned tradition or severed our spiritual lifeline. Only by not forgetting our origins can we open up the future, adhere to integrity and innovation, and be good at developing and transforming in innovation. Chinese traditional culture will surely radiate even more dazzling brilliance in the new era.
